Fungi and green algae, or lichens (a composite plant made up of close algae and fungi), protect photosynthetic cells in lichens from harmful environmental factors. Due to the success of lichen symbiosis, a wide variety of lichens are found on the rocks of the tropical tropics during the day and in areas with very cold climates.
